Due to the special composition of the tissues in their bodies, tendon damage in horses is usually characterised by a long recovery time and uncertain prognoses.

The superficial flexor tendon, the deep flexor tendon and the fetlock tendon are particularly susceptible to damage. The connective tissue that makes up tendon tissue consists of parallel collagen fibres. When they get damaged, the fibres tear and may need several weeks to align correctly again. To repair the damage the tendon cells must be able to build collagenous connective tissue, but the supply of nutrients to the tendon cells can be hampered by the damaged tissue.

The collagenous connective tissue is rich in the amino acids glycine (35%), proline (21%), hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine. The peptide chains in collagen are linked to carbohydrates like glucose and galactose and contain glycine. Collagen is made up of three peptide chains, a so-called triple helix.

• Gylcine is also called the amino acid of youth because it promotes growth and development and is of structural importance for bones, cartilage, skin, tendons and teeth.
• Glycine is also important for the formation of hemoglobin, bile acids, creatine, choline as well as the purine nucleic acids and glutathione (radical scavenger), even if it is not essential.
• A glycine deficiency can result in the breakdown of the collagenous connective tissue.
• Proline is also a non-essential amino acid. It is the precursor to hydroxyproline and determines the mechanical properties of collagen. In addition, proline is crucial for the folding of the proteins, i.e. the spatial structure, and therefore has a direct influence on the quality of the connective tissue.

Collagen hydrolysate has been used successfully in horse feed for a long time. In order to provide the collagen hydrolysate into a water-soluble and bioavailable form, it is obtained from collagen by enzymatic means and is then purified, concentrated, sterilised and ground.

• In special situations like tendon damage, the restoration of damaged joints and the reconstruction of cartilage tissue, the need for building blocks for the formation of collagenous connective tissue may increase.

Konstruktor vet contains a particularly high-quality collagen hydrolysate on a base of vitamin C-rich rose hips and a blend of herbs. This provides your horse with short-chain peptides, which are necessary for the formation of collagenous connective tissue. The recipe also contains bamboo shoots, which are rich in natural and highly bio-available silicon.

• Nucleotides are obtained from special yeast. Thanks to their significant involvement in protein synthesis, they are considered a miracle substance for tissue reconstruction. The absorption of the valuable ingredients of this collagen booster is positively influenced by an algae complex.

The Konstruktor vet can also be used as a supplement for horses in the growth and development phase, as well as for horses that are undergoing more intensive training, since it can contribute to a general increase in the amino acids.

Feeding recommendation:

• Large horses: 60g daily (4 measuring spoons full), correspondingly less for smaller horses.
• Feed daily for young horses or horses in training to improve the quality of protein supply for joints, tendons and ligaments.
